On Debian 10, I can't update or install software. How to fix?

As of mid-2025, Debian 10 (Buster) is archived, meaning standard repositories no longer work
. C-Servers still provides Debian 10 primarily for systems with low RAM, but the cloud image provided by Debian, unfortunately, does not include the changed repositories necessary for updates or software installs to occur under apt.

In order to update and get back this essential function, you must change /etc/apt/sources.list to use archive.debian.org.
Replace all existing lines with archive mirrors to maintain functionality.

Updated sources.list for Debian 10 (Buster):

deb http://archive.debian.org/debian/ buster main contrib non-free
deb http://archive.debian.org/debian/ buster-updates main contrib non-free
deb http://archive.debian.org/debian-security buster/updates main contrib non-free

The difference is this: you need to add "archive" on the address, just like above. This way, your apt will work again under Debian 10.

In some cases, you may also wish to benefit of newer packages. For that, Debian provides the "Backports" source, where you may be able to get more updated packages for your system. If you need newer packages for Buster, also add the following to sources.list:

deb http://archive.debian.org/debian/ buster-backports main contrib non-free

Similar instructions are applicable on other distro versions, e.g. Ubuntu 18.04 or CentOS. It's all a question of changing the correspondent source list to each package manager to the respective "archive" address, in order to have your package manager working again as intended.
