What is the C-Servers GoBack backup service?

The C-Servers GoBack service is a backup service provided automatically to all VPS customers, regardless of their package or paid price, which executes full backups of their paid-for VPS without any extra cost.

It is designed to allow for a convenient way of recovering previous working configurations or deployments at C-Servers from existing customers up to 59 days from the original backup, ensuring a central backup path. For customers with packages of less than 768MB of RAM, recovery can occur up to 29 days. 

How does it work?

Every 2nd day of each month, at 01h30 GMT +0, an automatic backup runs throughout the entirety of VPS services available at C-Servers under the SolusVM 2 layer. The backup center nodes are provided with a Gigabit connection, ensuring a fast and reliable backup for every customer. VPS with less than 768MB have always one backup available, scheduled in a fixed way and done at this time; VPS with more than 768MB of RAM have two backups available. It is a monthly backup, therefore.

After the maximum number of backups is provided for a given package, the following backup removes the oldest of the backups originally executed. In that sense, it's a rolling backup as well.

Are there any VPS services that are not backed up?

Yes: the VintageVPS services are in an entirely different platform, and no backups are provided for these at this moment. This may change in the future.

Okay, but provider X gives me free snapshots. How is your offer an advantage?

Firstly, because in order to provide with snapshots, one has to use a mechanism that provides lower disk performance - only the QCOW2 protocol is able to provide snapshots. C-Servers does not use such a format, and prefers to entirely relay a full backup just like you would have on your regular PC, allowing you much higher disk speeds with the convenience of also having a full backup - the best of both worlds.

Secondly: a snapshot is usually stored on the very same server you are into, for technical reasons pertaining to hypervisor usage of the QCOW2 protocol. At C-Servers, our GoBack offer is stored in a completely different server, with specifically purchased-for disk usage, and entirely private: simple, safe, secure. If a backup is on the very same node you are into, it can't really be called a backup - ours really is a backup as backups usually are.

Also, the fact that it is a backup, and not a snapshot, ensures that in the event of any issue on your side, you can restore a previous backup directly from the Portal (portal.cfld.uk); and that, if your server is deleted (either willingly or as an accident) and you wish to recover the file of your original VPS, you can always do it as well sending us a ticket, and requesting us to send our copy, which we'll provide.

Lastly, snapshots are always incremental (also due to the very same QCOW2 nature). If you have the bad luck of a previous snapshot with corrupted data or disk, subsequent snapshots will always bring back this undesirable data, rendering unusable a source of protection you counted on. Full backups are the full configuration, as it was, and in that sense are always reliable. 

Hmmm, I'd like to have more than 1 or 2 backups of my server at any given moment. Can I pay extra to have them?

An extra service is possible for all VPS services (available from January 3rd, 2024), which is called "GoBack Plus - Extra Backups". This service, deployed manually after purchase within 24/48h of your purchase without any further intervention required, ensures that you can store an unlimited number of backups with any schedule you desire to have, and these are retained for your service.

Regardless of the pricing of the VPS you've purchased, you always pay a fixed cost, because disk space also does have a fixed cost - it wouldn't make much sense for us to charge a variable extra because of a higher tier.

Can I rely on your backup as being the only backup I must do?

You know what they say about backups - you can never have enough. C-Servers GoBack is a great one-stop shop for an easy to deploy backup scheme; however, it is always recommended that you hold more than one backup. Our service simply ensures that you have a cheap, painless way of having backups without thinking much about it, and most importantly, starting for free and provided to all customers.
